The Landie – RESTORATION PROJECT #2

As if we didn’t have enough to do, Mike went and bought a 1954 Series 1 short wheel base Land Rover from a bloke over in Kakanui. Yet another road trip with our V8 Land Rover salvage truck followed and after a whitebait dinner (yum!) and a night in the Scammell family bach/crib at Kakanui (thanks!), the Landie was on our salvage trailer and ready to roll. A small detour through the Oamaru historic district followed and then the show was on the road.

Once back in Arrowtown we had a look over her and made a plan. First the body will come off so we can see what needs to be done. In any case the chassis will need some welding and a repaint and the front bulkhead needs replacing. On the good news side she runs well and the suspension and brakes work!

It’s had a 173 Holden motor put in at some point so we will have to decide whether we keep this common period upgrade (common in NZ at least) or swap out for a genuine Land Rover lump.

We’re working on the Landie with the intention of selling her when we’re done, so if you’ve always wanted one of these classics get in touch so we can build her up to your spec.

You can follow our progress here, on the restoration page, and on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
